Life in the Spirit

1There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Some manuscripts add who walk not according to the flesh (but according to the Spirit)
2For the law of bthe Spirit of life chas set you
Some manuscripts me
free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
3For eGod has done what the law, fweakened by the flesh, gcould not do. hBy sending his own Son iin the likeness of sinful flesh and jfor sin,
Or  and as a sin offering
he condemned sin in the flesh,
4in order that lthe righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, mwho walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5For nthose who live according to the flesh set their minds on othe things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on pthe things of the Spirit. 6For to set qthe mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7For the mind that is set on the flesh is rhostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; sindeed, it cannot. 8Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

9You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact tthe Spirit of God dwells in you. uAnyone who does not have vthe Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11If the Spirit of whim who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus
Some manuscripts lack  Jesus
from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies ythrough his Spirit who dwells in you.

Heirs with Christ

12So then, brothers,
Or  brothers and sisters; also verse 29
we are debtors, aanot to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
13For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you abput to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14For all who are acled by the Spirit of God are adsons
See discussion on “sons” in the Preface
of God.
15For afyou did not receive agthe spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of ahadoption as sons, by whom we cry, aiAbba! Father!” 16 ajThe Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17and if children, then akheirsheirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, alprovided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

Future Glory

18For I consider that the sufferings of this present time amare not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19For the creation waits with eager longing for anthe revealing of the sons of God. 20For the creation aowas subjected to futility, not willingly, but apbecause of him who subjected it, in hope 21that aqthe creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22For we know that arthe whole creation ashas been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have atthe firstfruits of the Spirit, augroan inwardly as avwe wait eagerly for adoption as sons, awthe redemption of our bodies. 24For axin this hope we were saved. Now ayhope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25But if we hope for what we do not see, we azwait for it with patience.

26Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For bawe do not know what to pray for as we ought, but bbthe Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27And bche who searches hearts knows what is bdthe mind of the Spirit, because
Or that
the Spirit bfintercedes for the saints bgaccording to the will of God.
28And we know that for those who love God all things work together bhfor good,
Some manuscripts  God works all things together for good, or God works in all things for the good
for bjthose who are called according to his purpose.
29For those whom he bkforeknew he also blpredestined bmto be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be bnthe firstborn among many brothers. 30And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also bojustified, and those whom he justified he also bpglorified.

God’s Everlasting Love

31What then shall we say to these things? bqIf God is for us, who can be
Or  who is
against us?
32 bsHe who did not spare his own Son but btgave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? buIt is God who justifies. 34 bvWho is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who diedmore than that, who was raisedbwwho is at the right hand of God, bxwho indeed is interceding for us.
Or Is it Christ Jesus who died . . . for us?
35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36As it is written,

bz“For your sake cawe are being killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37No, in all these things we are more than cbconquerors through cchim who loved us. 38For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
