Simonin pojat Juudas ja Johannses voittavat Kendebeuksen Kedronin luona. Simonin ja hänen kaksi poikaansa, Mattatiaan ja Juudaan murhaa Ptolemaios; mutta Johannes pelastuu ja astuu isänsä sijalle.
1Mutta Johannes lähti Gasarasta ja kertoi isällensä Simonille, mitä Kendebeus toimitti. 2Silloin Simon kutsui tykönsä kaksi vanhinta poikaansa, Juudaan ja Johanneksen, ja sanoi heille: Minä ja minun veljeni ja minun isäni huone olemme käyneet Israelin sotia nuoruudestamme tähän päivään asti, ja meidän kättemme kautta on Israel monta kertaa pelastunut. 3Mutta nyt minä olen tullut vanhaksi, ja te olette taivaan armosta parhaassa iässä: astukaa siis minun ja minun veljeni sijalle ja lähtekää taistelemaan kansamme puolesta, ja taivaan apu olkoon teidän kanssanne. 4Sitten hän valitsi maasta kaksikymmentä tuhatta sotamiestä sekä ratsumiehiä; ja he lähtivät Kendebeusta vastaan ja jäivät yöksi Moodeiniin. 5Mutta aamulla varhain he lähtivät liikkeelle ja menivät tasangolle. Ja katso, suuri sotajoukko, jalka- ja ratsuväkeä, tuli heitä vastaan, ja puro oli heidän välillään. 6Johannes ja hänen väkensä asettuivat leiriin vihollista vastaan; mutta kun hän näki väen pelkäävän mennä puron poikki, niin hän itse meni ensimmäisenä sen poikki. Ja kun miehet näkivät hänen menevän, niin hekin menivät yli hänen perässään. 7Hän jakoi nyt väkensä, niin että ratsumiehet tulivat jalkamiesten väliin; vihollisten ratsuväki oli näet ylen suuri. 8JA he puhalsivat sotatorviin, ja Kendebeus ja hänen sotajoukkonsa ajettiin pakoon, ja monta heistä kaatui lävistettyinä; jäljellejääneet taas pakenivat linnoitukseen. 9Silloin haavoittui Juudas, Johanneksen veli; mutta Johannes ajoi heitä takaa hamaan Kedroniin asti, jonka Kendebeus oli linnoittanut. 10Ja he pakenivat torneihin, joita oli Asdodin kedolla, ja Johannes poltti tämän kaupungin tulella. Ja vihollisia kaatui noin tuhat miestä; sitten Johannes palasi rauhassa takaisin Juudeaan. 11Ptolemaios, Abubuksen poika, oli asetettu Jerikon lakeuden päälliköksi. Hänellä oli hallussaan paljon hopeaa ja kultaa, 12sillä hän oli yimmäisen papin vävy. 13Sentähden hänen sydämensä ylpistyi, ja hän aikoi saada maan valtaansa ja suunnitteli salajuonia Simonia ja hänen poikiansa vastaan, raivatakseen heidät tieltä. 14Mutta Simonilla oli tapana käydä maan kaupungeissa huolehtimassa niiden menestyksestä. Niin hän tuli alas Jerikoon mukanaan poikansa Mattatias ja Juudas yhdennessätoista kuussa, se on sabat-kuussa, vuonna 177. 15Ja Abubuksen poika, petos mielessään, otti heidät vastaan pienessä Dook nimisessä linnoituksessa, jonka hän oli rakentanut, ja laittoi heille suuret pidot, mutta oli sijoittanut sinne salaa miehiä. 16Mutta kun Simon ja hänen poikansa olivat päihtyneet, nousivat Ptolemaios ja hänen miehensä, ottivat aseensa ja hyökkäsivät Simonin kimppuun pitohuoneeseen ja tappoivat hänet ja hänen poikansa sekä muutamia hänen palvelijoistaan. 17Hän osoitti siten suurta uskottomuutta ja maksoi hyvän pahalla. 18Sitten Ptolemaios kirjoitti tästä kuninkaalle ja lähetti pyytämään häneltä, että hän toimittaisi hänelle avuksi sotaväkeä ja luovuttaisi hänelle heidän maansa ja kaupunkinsa. 19Ja hän lähetti toisia Gasaraan raivaamaan tieltä Johanneksen; ja päämiehille hän lähetti kirjeitä ja kehoitti heitä tulemaan luoksensa, antaakseen heille hopeaa ja kultaa ja muita lahjoja. 20Ja toisia hän taas lähetti ottamaan valtaansa Jerusalemin temppelivuoren. 21Mutta muuan mies kiiruhti edellä Gasaraan ja kertoi Johannekselle, että hänen isänsä ja hänen veljensä olivat saaneet surmansa, ja että Ptolemaios oli jo lähettänyt miehiä, joiden tuli tappaa hänetkin. 22Kuultuaan tämän sanoman Johannes peljästyi suuresti; ja hän antoi ottaa kiinni ne miehet, jotka olivat tulleet häntä tappamaan, ja surmautti heidät, sillä hän tiesi, että he tavoittelivat häntä tappaaksensa. 23Mitä muuta on sanottava Johanneksesta ja hänen sodistaan ja sankariteoistaan, joita hän teki, ja miten hän jälleen rakensi muurit ja mitä muuta hän teki, 24katso, se on muistiin kirjoitettu aikakirjassa, joka kertoo hänestä ylimmäisenä pappina, alkaen siitä ajasta, jolloin hän tuli ylimmäiseksi papiksi isänsä jälkeen. How do I do a word study?

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
