Psalms 69
Save Me, O God
To the choirmaster: according to aLilies. Of David.
1Save me, O God!For bthe waters have come up to my neck. ▼
▼Or waters threaten my life
2I sink in deep dmire,
where there is no foothold;
I have come into deep waters,
and the flood esweeps over me.
3 fI am weary with my crying out;
gmy throat is parched.
hMy eyes grow dim
with iwaiting for my God.
4 jMore in number than the hairs of my head
are kthose who hate me lwithout cause;
mighty are those who would destroy me,
mthose who attack me with lies.
What I did not steal
must I now restore?
5O God, you know my folly;
the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.
6Let not those who hope in you nbe put to shame through me,
O Lord God of hosts;
let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me,
O God of Israel.
7For it is ofor your sake that I have borne reproach,
that dishonor has covered my face.
8I have become pa stranger to my brothers,
an alien to my mother’s sons.
9For qzeal for your house has consumed me,
and rthe reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.
10When I wept and humbled ▼
▼Hebrew lacks and humbled
my soul with fasting,it became my reproach.
11When I made tsackcloth my clothing,
I became ua byword to them.
12I am the talk of those who vsit in the gate,
and the drunkards make wsongs about me.
13But as for me, my xprayer is to you, O Lord.
At yan acceptable time, O God,
in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness.
14Deliver me
from sinking in zthe mire;
aalet me be delivered from my enemies
and from abthe deep waters.
15Let not the flood sweep over me,
or the deep swallow me up,
or acthe pit close adits mouth over me.
16Answer me, O Lord, for your aesteadfast love is good;
according to your abundant afmercy, agturn to me.
17 ahHide not your face from your servant,
aifor I am in distress; ajmake haste to answer me.
18Draw near to my soul, redeem me;
ransom me because of my enemies!
19You know my akreproach,
and my shame and my dishonor;
my foes are all known to you.
20 alReproaches have broken my heart,
so that I am in amdespair.
I anlooked for aopity, but there was none,
and for apcomforters, but I found none.
21They gave me aqpoison for food,
and for my thirst they gave me arsour wine to drink.
22 asLet their own attable before them become a snare;
auand when they are at peace, let it become a trap. ▼
▼Hebrew; a slight revocalization yields (compare Septuagint, Syriac, Jerome) a snare, and retribution and a trap
23 awLet their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see,
axand make their loins tremble continually.
24Pour out your indignation upon them,
and let your burning anger overtake them.
25 ayMay their camp be a desolation;
let no one dwell in their tents.
26For they azpersecute him whom bayou have struck down,
and they recount the pain of bbthose you have wounded.
27 bcAdd to them punishment upon punishment;
may they have no acquittal from you. ▼
▼Hebrew may they not come into your righteousness
28Let them be beblotted out of the book of the living;
let them not be bfenrolled among the righteous.
29But I am afflicted and in pain;
let your salvation, O God, bgset me on high!
30I will bhpraise the name of God with a song;
I will bimagnify him with bjthanksgiving.
31This will bkplease the Lord more than an ox
or a bull blwith horns and hoofs.
32When bmthe humble see it they will be glad;
you who seek God, bnlet your hearts revive.
33For the Lord hears the needy
and bodoes not despise his own people who are prisoners.
34Let bpheaven and earth praise him,
the seas and everything that moves in them.
35For bqGod will save Zion
and build up the cities of Judah,
and people shall dwell there and possess it;
36 brthe offspring of his servants shall inherit it,
and those who love his name shall dwell in it.
