Naik banding
1 Tiga hari setelah Festus tiba di Kaisarea untuk memangku jabatannya yang baru, ia berangkat ke Yerusalem. 2Di sana para imam dan para pemimpin Yahudi menemui dia serta menyampaikan dakwaan mereka terhadap Paulus. 3Mereka mohon supaya Paulus dibawa ke Yerusalem dengan segera. (Rencana mereka ialah menghadang serta membunuhnya.) 4Tetapi Festus menjawab bahwa karena Paulus berada di Kaisarea, sedangkan ia sendiri tidak lama lagi akan kembali ke sana, 5maka pihak yang berwewenang dalam perkara itu hendaknya turut dengan dia untuk mengajukan Paulus ke depan pengadilan.6Delapan atau sepuluh hari kemudian ia kembali ke Kaisarea dan keesokan harinya perkara Paulus disidangkan.
7Ketika Paulus tiba di ruang pengadilan, orang-orang Yahudi dari Yerusalem mengerumuninya serta melemparkan tuduhan-tuduhan yang tidak dapat mereka buktikan. 8Paulus menyangkal segala tuduhan itu. “Saya tidak bersalah,” katanya, “saya tidak melanggar hukum Yahudi, atau mencemarkan Bait Allah, ataupun memberontak melawan pemerintah Romawi.”
9Kemudian Festus yang ingin mengambil hati orang-orang Yahudi, bertanya kepadanya, “Bersediakah engkau pergi ke Yerusalem untuk kuadili di sana?”
10– 11Tetapi Paulus menjawab, “Tidak! Hamba menuntut hak untuk dihadapkan kepada Kaisar. Yang Mulia tahu sendiri hamba tidak bersalah. Seandainya hamba telah berbuat sesuatu yang patut dikenakan hukuman mati, hamba rela dihukum mati. Tetapi hamba tidak bersalah dan Yang Mulia atau siapa pun juga tidak berhak menyerahkan hamba kepada orang-orang ini untuk dibunuh. Hamba minta naik banding kepada Kaisar.”
12Festus berunding dengan para penasihatnya, kemudian menjawab, “Baiklah! Engkau telah minta naik banding kepada Kaisar, maka kepada Kaisarlah engkau akan dihadapkan!”
Paulus di hadapan Raja Agripa
13Beberapa hari kemudian Raja Agripa bersama dengan Bernike datang berkunjung kepada Festus. 14Selama kunjungan mereka beberapa hari itu, Festus mengemukakan perkara Paulus kepada raja. “Di sini ada seorang tahanan yang perkaranya jatuh ke tangan saya ketika Feliks pergi,” katanya kepada raja. 15“Ketika saya berada di Yerusalem, para imam kepala dan para pemimpin orang Yahudi datang menghadap serta mengajukan dakwaan mereka terhadap dia dan meminta supaya orang itu dibunuh. 16Tentu saja dengan segera saya jelaskan kepada mereka bahwa hukum Romawi tidak membolehkan seseorang dihukum sebelum diadili. Ia diberi kesempatan untuk membela diri di hadapan para pendakwa.17“Ketika mereka datang kemari untuk menghadiri sidang pengadilan, maka keesokan harinya saya menyidangkan perkara Paulus dan memerintahkan supaya dia dibawa masuk. 18Tetapi tuduhan-tuduhan yang dilemparkan kepadanya sama sekali bukan seperti yang saya duga, 19melainkan mengenai agama mereka dan mengenai seseorang bernama Yesus yang telah mati, tetapi Paulus bersikeras menyatakan bahwa Ia hidup! 20Saya kebingungan menghadapi perkara semacam ini dan bertanya kepadanya apakah ia bersedia diadili di Yerusalem atas tuduhan-tuduhan itu. 21Tetapi Paulus minta naik banding kepada Kaisar! Karena itu, saya mengembalikan dia ke penjara sampai saya dapat mengirimkan dia kepada Kaisar.”
22“Ingin juga saya mendengar orang itu,” kata Agripa.
“Besok engkau akan mendengar dia,” sahut Festus.
23Demikianlah keesokan harinya, setelah raja dan Bernike tiba di ruang pengadilan dengan segala kebesaran disertai oleh perwira-perwira dan tokoh-tokoh terkemuka di kota itu, Festus memerintahkan supaya Paulus dibawa masuk.
24Kemudian Festus berbicara kepada sekalian yang hadir: “Raja Agripa dan hadirin sekalian, inilah orang yang dituntut hukuman mati oleh orang-orang Yahudi yang tinggal di sini maupun yang tinggal di Yerusalem. 25Tetapi pada hemat saya tidak ada kesalahannya yang dapat dikenakan hukuman mati. Namun, ia minta naik banding kepada Kaisar, sehingga mau tidak mau saya harus mengirimkannya kepada Kaisar. 26Tetapi apa yang harus saya tuliskan kepada Kaisar? Sebab tidak ada yang dapat dituduhkan kepadanya. Karena itulah saya telah membawa dia kepada Saudara sekalian, teristimewa pula kepada engkau, Raja Agripa, untuk memeriksanya dan memberitahukan kepada saya apa yang harus saya tuliskan. 27Sebab tidak beralasan rasanya mengirimkan seorang tahanan kepada Kaisar tanpa tuduhan apa-apa.”

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
