1După aceea, Iosif i-a poruncit administratorului casei sale, zicând: „Umple sacii acestor oameni cu mâncare, atât cât pot duce și pune argintul fiecăruia la gura sacului său. 2Pune paharul meu, paharul de argint, la gura sacului celui mai mic, împreună cu argintul pentru grâne“. El a făcut așa cum i-a zis Iosif.3Dimineață, când s-a luminat, oamenii au fost trimiși spre casă cu măgarii lor. 4Ei au ieșit din cetate, dar nici nu s-au depărtat bine că Iosif i-a spus administratorului casei sale: „Ridică-te, urmărește-i pe acei oameni, iar când îi vei ajunge, întreabă-i: «De ce ați răsplătit binele cu rău? 5Nu este acesta paharul din care bea stăpânul meu și pe care îl folosește el pentru ghicire? ▼
▼Cu referire la hidromanție, arta de interpretare a semnelor în lichide (apă, vin, ulei), prin care omul păgân credea că poate descoperi voia divinității. Iosif, care primise darul interpretării viselor de la Dumnezeu, folosește paharul ca un pretext pentru a-i confrunta pe frații săi.
Rău lucru ați făcut!»“. 6Când i-a ajuns, le-a spus aceste cuvinte. 7Ei i-au răspuns:
‒ De ce spune stăpânul nostru aceste cuvinte? Nici gând ca slujitorii tăi să fi făcut acest lucru! 8Iată, noi ți-am adus înapoi din țara Canaanului argintul pe care l-am găsit la gura sacilor noștri. Cum să fi furat argint sau aur din casa stăpânului tău? 9Fie ca acela dintre slujitorii tăi, la care va fi găsit paharul, să moară, iar noi să devenim slujitorii stăpânului nostru.
10El le-a zis:
‒ Fie așa cum ați spus. Cel la care va fi găsit paharul va fi slujitorul meu, dar voi ceilalți veți fi nevinovați.
11Fiecare și-a dat repede jos sacul și l-a deschis. 12El a căutat paharul, începând cu cel mai mare și terminând cu cel mai mic, iar acesta a fost găsit în sacul lui Beniamin. 13Atunci ei și-au sfâșiat hainele. Fiecare și-a încărcat măgarul și s-au întors cu toții în cetate. 14Iuda și frații săi au intrat în casa lui Iosif, în timp ce acesta era încă acolo, și s-au plecat la pământ înaintea lui.
15Iosif le-a zis:
‒ Ce înseamnă fapta acesta pe care ați făcut-o? Nu știți că un om ca mine poate ghici? ▼
16Iuda i-a răspuns:
‒ Ce putem să-i spunem stăpânului nostru? Ce putem zice? Cum să ne dezvinovățim? Dumnezeu a descoperit nelegiuirea slujitorilor tăi. Iată-ne sclavi ai stăpânului nostru, noi și cel la care a fost găsit paharul.
17Dar el a zis:
‒ Nici gând să fac acest lucru! Cel la care a fost găsit paharul va fi sclavul meu, iar voi duceți-vă în pace la tatăl vostru.
18Atunci Iuda s-a apropiat de el și a zis:
‒ Ah, stăpâne, te rog, dă-i voie slujitorului tău să-i spună ceva stăpânului meu și să nu te mânii pe slujitorul tău, pentru că tu ești ca Faraon. 19Stăpânul meu i-a întrebat pe slujitorii săi, zicând: „Aveți un tată sau un frate?“. 20Noi i-am răspuns stăpânului nostru: „Avem un tată bătrân, și mai este un băiat tânăr, născut la bătrânețea lui. Fratele acestuia este mort. Doar el i-a mai rămas mamei sale, iar tatăl său îl iubește“. 21Atunci tu le-ai cerut slujitorilor tăi: „Aduceți-l la mine ca să-l văd cu ochii mei“. 22Noi i-am spus stăpânului nostru: „Băiatul nu-l poate părăsi pe tatăl său. Dacă l-ar părăsi pe tatăl său, acesta ar muri“. 23Dar tu le-ai zis slujitorilor tăi: „Dacă fratele vostru mai mic nu va veni cu voi, nu-mi veți mai vedea fața“. 24Când ne-am întors la slujitorul tău, tatăl meu, i-am spus cuvintele stăpânului nostru. 25Când tatăl nostru ne-a zis: „Duceți-vă înapoi și cumpărați-ne puțină mâncare“, 26noi i-am răspuns: „Nu putem merge decât dacă va veni cu noi și fratele nostru mai mic, pentru că nu putem să vedem fața acelui om decât dacă fratele nostru mai mic este cu noi“. 27Atunci slujitorul tău, tatăl meu, ne-a zis: „Voi știți că soția mea a născut doi fii. 28Unul a plecat de la mine, astfel că am zis: «Sigur a fost sfâșiat de animalele sălbatice». Și nu l-am mai văzut până acum. 29Dacă mi-l luați și pe acesta și i se întâmplă vreo nenorocire, în suferință îmi veți coborî perii cărunți în Locuința Morților“. 30De aceea, dacă mă voi întoarce la slujitorul tău, tatăl meu, și băiatul nu va fi cu noi, pentru că sufletul lui este nedezlipit de sufletul acestuia, 31el va muri când va vedea că băiatul nu este. Iar slujitorii tăi vor coborî cu durere perii cărunți ai slujitorului tău, tatăl nostru, în Locuința Morților. 32Căci slujitorul tău s-a pus garant la tatăl meu pentru băiat, zicând: „Dacă nu-l voi aduce înapoi la tine, voi fi vinovat înaintea ta, tatăl meu, pentru totdeauna“. 33Prin urmare, dă-i voie, te rog, slujitorului tău să rămână în locul băiatului, ca slujitor al stăpânului meu, și dă-i voie băiatului să plece împreună cu frații săi. 34Cum să mă duc înapoi la tatăl meu dacă băiatul nu este cu mine? Să nu văd durerea care va veni asupra tatălui meu!

How do I do a word study?

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
