Saul stierf om zijn ongehoorzaamheid aan de Here en omdat hij een waarzegster had geraadpleegd 1in plaats van de Here om leiding te vragen. Daarom doodde de Here hem en gaf het koninkrijk aan David, de zoon van Isaï. 2David, koning van Israël
3De leiders van Israël kwamen bij David in Hebron en zeiden: ‘Wij zijn uw bloedeigen broeders. 4Zelfs toen Saul nog koning was, was u degene die onze legers aanvoerde in de strijd en ook weer veilig terugbracht. De Here, onze God, heeft u gezegd: “U zult de herder van mijn volk Israël zijn. Maar de mensen uit Jebus weigerden hem de toegang tot de stad. David veroverde daarop de burcht Sion, die later Stad van David werd genoemd en zei tegen zijn mannen: ‘Wie van jullie het eerst een Jebusiet doodt, wordt tot opperbevelhebber bevorderd.’ Joab, de zoon van Seruja, was de eerste en werd op die manier opperbevelhebber in Davids leger. 9David nam zijn intrek in de burcht en daarom wordt het sindsdien Stad van David genoemd. 10Hij breidde de stad uit vanuit de burcht Millo, terwijl Joab de rest van Jeruzalem herbouwde. 11David werd steeds beroemder en machtiger, want de Here van de hemelse legers stond aan zijn kant. 12Dit zijn de namen van de moedigste helden onder Davids mannen. Zij oefenden veel druk uit op de leiders van Israël om hem tot hun koning te maken, zoals de Here had voorzegd: 13Jasobam, de zoon van Chachmon, was de voornaamste van de drie grootste helden onder Davids mannen. Hij doodde eens driehonderd mannen met zijn speer. 14De tweede van de drie was Elazar, de zoon van de Achoachiet Dodo. 15Hij bevond zich in Davids gezelschap tijdens de veldslag tegen de Filistijnen bij Pas-Dammim. Het Israëlitische leger bevond zich in een akker met gerst, maar sloeg al gauw op de vlucht. 16Hij hield echter stand, midden op de akker, heroverde hem en doodde de Filistijnen. De Here schonk door hem een grote overwinning. 17Een andere keer zochten drie van de dertig aanvoerders David op in de grot van Adullam, waar hij zich verborgen hield. De Filistijnen hadden hun kamp opgeslagen in het dal van Refaïm. 18David bevond zich op dat moment in de vesting, een legergroep van de Filistijnen had inmiddels Bethlehem ingenomen. 19David hunkerde ernaar iets te drinken uit de put in Bethlehem, die daar vlak bij de poort lag. braken deze drie door de Filistijnse linies, haalden wat water uit de bron en brachten dat naar David. Maar hij wilde het niet opdrinken! In plaats daarvan goot hij het uit als een offer aan de Here en zei: ‘God moge mij iets aandoen, als ik dit opdrink. Dit is het bloed van de mannen die hun levens waagden om het te halen!’ 22Joabs broer Absai was de aanvoerder van de groep van dertig. Hij had zijn plaats onder hen verworven door ook ooit driehonderd mannen te doden met zijn speer. 23Hij was de leider en beroemdste man van de dertig, maar bereikte niet het peil van de eerstgenoemde drie. 24Benaja, wiens vader Jojada was, een vermaard strijder uit Kabseël, doodde de twee beroemde reuzen uit Moab. Tevens doodde hij eens helemaal alleen een leeuw. Dat was op zichzelf nog niet zo bijzonder, maar wel dat hij dat deed in een glibberige modderkuil, terwijl er een laag sneeuw lag. 25Ook doodde hij eens een Egyptenaar van ruim twee meter, wiens speer zo dik was als de boom van een weefgetouw. When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
