Later trokken vijfhonderd van deze mannen, afkomstig van de stam van Simeon, naar de berg Seïr. Hun leiders waren Pelatja, Nearja, Refaja en Uzziël, allemaal zonen van Jisi. Daar doodden zij de weinige nog in leven zijnde Amalekieten. Sinds die tijd wonen zij daar. 2 De nakomelingen van Ruben en Gad
3De oudste zoon van Israël was Ruben, maar omdat hij zijn vader schande aandeed door met een van diens vrouwen te slapen, werd zijn eerstgeboorterecht aan het nageslacht van zijn halfbroer Jozef gegeven. Toch vermeldt het officiële geslachtsregister Jozef niet als oudste zoon. 4Juda was de sterkste en meest invloedrijke stam van Israël en uit die stam kwam de leider voort, maar Jozef hield het geboorterecht. 5De zonen van Ruben, de zoon van Israël, waren Chanoch, Pallu, Chesron en Karmi. 6Joëls nakomelingen waren zijn zoon Semaja, zijn kleinzoon Gog en zijn achterkleinzoon Simi. 7Simiʼs zoon was Micha, zijn kleinzoon was Reaja en zijn achterkleinzoon Baäl. Zijn familieleden werden familiehoofden en kwamen voor in het officiële geslachtsregister: Jeïel, Zecharja, Bela, de zoon van Azaz, zoon van Sema, zoon van Joël. Deze laatste woonde in Aroër, in een gebied dat zich uitstrekte tot de berg Nebo en Baäl-Meon. 11Joël was veehouder en weidde zijn vee in oostelijke richting, naar de rand van de woestijn en de rivier de Eufraat, want er was veel vee in het land Gilead. 12Tijdens de regering van koning Saul versloegen de mannen van Ruben de Hagrieten en gingen wonen in hun tentenkampen in het oostelijk deel van Gilead. 13Tegenover hen, in het land Basan, woonden de nakomelingen van Gad, die zich hadden verspreid tot bij Salka. 14Onder hen was Joël de invloedrijkste, gevolgd door Safam als tweede en Janai en Safat als derden. 15Hun familieleden, de leiders van de zeven families, waren: Michaël, Mesullam, Seba, Jorai, Jakan, Zia en Heber. 16Deze waren de zonen van Abichaïl, die de zoon was van Churi, de zoon van Jaroach, de zoon van Gilead, de zoon van Michaël, de zoon van Jesisai, de zoon van Jachdo, de zoon van Buz. 17Achi, de zoon van Abdiël en een kleinzoon van Guni, was de leider van de familie. 18De familie woonde in en om Gilead (in het land Basan) en door het hele weidegebied van Saron. 19Allen waren opgenomen in het officiële geslachtsregister ten tijde van koning Jotam van Juda en koning Jerobeam van Israël. 20Het leger van Ruben, Gad en Manasse bestond uit 44.760 gewapende, goed geoefende en moedige mannen. 21Zij voerden oorlog tegen de Hagrieten, de Jeturieten, de Nafisieten en de Nodabieten. 22Zij vroegen God om hulp en Hij hielp hen omdat zij op Hem vertrouwden. Zo werden de Hagrieten en al hun bondgenoten verslagen. 23De buit bestond uit vijftigduizend kamelen, tweehonderdvijftigduizend schapen, tweeduizend ezels en honderdduizend krijgsgevangenen. 24Tevens sneuvelden grote aantallen vijanden in de strijd, want God had tegen hen gestreden. Zo bleven de Rubenieten in het gebied van de Hagrieten wonen tot de tijd van de ballingschap. 25De stam van Manasse leefde verspreid door het land van Basan tot Baäl-Hermon, Senir en de berg Hermon. Ook deze stam telde vele leden. 26De familiehoofden van deze stam waren Efer, Jisi, Eliël, Azriël, Jirmeja, Hodawja en Jachdiël. Ieder van hen had een grote reputatie als strijder en aanvoerder.
