Abiam begon zijn drie jaar durende regeringsperiode als koning van Juda in Jeruzalem, tijdens het achttiende regeringsjaar van Jerobeam in Israël. Abiams moeder heette Maächa en zij was een kleindochter van Abisalom. 4Hij was net zoʼn grote zondaar als zijn vader en zijn hart was niet aan God toegewijd, zoals bij David wel het geval was. 5Maar ondanks Abiams zonden maakte de Here, wegens zijn liefde voor David, geen einde aan de lijn van Davids koninklijke nakomelingen. 6Want David had de Here zijn hele leven gehoorzaamd, behalve in de kwestie van de Hethiet Uria. 7De oorlog die destijds tussen Rechabeam en Jerobeam ontstond, bleef ook tijdens Abiams leven doorwoeden. 8De rest van de geschiedenis van Abiam is beschreven in de Kronieken van de koningen van Juda, onder andere de oorlog die Abiam met Jerobeam voerde. 9Na zijn dood werd hij in Jeruzalem begraven en zijn zoon Asa volgde hem op. 10Asa werd koning van Juda en zetelde in Jeruzalem. Dat gebeurde in het twintigste regeringsjaar van Jerobeam over Israël. 11Hij regeerde eenenveertig jaar. Zijn grootmoeder was Maächa, de kleindochter van Abisalom. 12Zijn levenswijze kon de goedkeuring van de Here wegdragen, net zoals dat met zijn voorvader David het geval was geweest. 13Hij verbande de tempelprostituees en verwijderde alle afgodsbeelden die zijn vader en grootvader hadden gemaakt. 14Zijn grootmoeder Maächa ontnam hij de titel en invloed van koningin-moeder, omdat ook zij een afgodsbeeld van Asjera had gemaakt. Dat beeld liet hij vernielen en verbranden bij de beek Kidron. 15De tempels op de heuvels werden niet afgebroken, maar Asa was zijn leven lang wel volkomen toegewijd aan de Here. 16Hij gaf de door zijn vader geheiligde gaven en de zilveren en gouden voorwerpen die hij zelf ter beschikking had gesteld, een vaste plaats in de tempel. 17Hun leven lang heerste oorlog tussen Asa van Juda en Basa van Israël. 18Koning Basa bouwde de versterkte stad Rama in een poging de handelsroute naar Jeruzalem af te snijden. 19Asaʼs reactie daarop was dat hij al het zilver en goud dat van de tempelschat was overgebleven, en alle paleisschatten aan zijn hovelingen gaf om naar koning Benhadad van Syrië in Damascus te brengen, met daarbij de boodschap: 20‘Laten wij bondgenoten worden, net zoals onze vaders waren. Ik stuur u daarvoor een geschenk van goud en zilver. Verbreek alstublieft uw verbond met koning Basa van Israël, zodat hij mij met rust laat.’ 21Benhadad ging akkoord en stuurde meteen zijn legers op enkele Israëlitische steden af. Hij verwoestte Ijjon, Dan, Abel-Bet-Maächa, heel Kinneret en het hele gebied van Naftali. 22Toen Basa het nieuws over de aanval vernam, legde hij de bouw van Rama stil en bleef in Tirsa. 23Daarop riep koning Asa alle gezonde mannen van heel Juda op om Rama te verwoesten en de stenen en het hout voor de bouw weg te halen. Die materialen gebruikte koning Asa daarna om de stad Geba in Benjamin en de stad Mispa te bouwen. 24De rest van Asaʼs levensloop—zijn veroveringen, daden en de namen van de steden die hij bouwde—zijn vermeld in de Kronieken van de koningen van Juda. Op zijn oude dag kreeg hij last van een ziekte aan zijn voeten. 25Na zijn dood werd hij begraven op de koninklijke begraafplaats in Jeruzalem. Daarna werd zijn zoon Josafat in zijn plaats koning van Juda. 26Intussen was in Israël Jerobeams zoon Nadab aan de macht gekomen. Hij regeerde twee jaar, beginnend in het tweede regeringsjaar van koning Asa van Juda. 27Maar hij was een slechte koning in de ogen van de Here. Evenals zijn vader vereerde hij vele afgoden en verleidde hij zijn onderdanen tot zonde. 28Basa, de zoon van Achia, van de stam van Issachar, zette een samenzwering tegen hem op touw en vermoordde hem terwijl hij met het Israëlitische leger de Filistijnse stad Gibbeton belegerde. 29Zo nam Basa de plaats van Nadab als koning van Israël in. Dat gebeurde in het derde regeringsjaar van koning Asa van Juda. 30Tijdens zijn bewind vermoordde hij alle familieleden van koning Jerobeam, zodat geen enkel lid van die familie overbleef.
