De Giblieten hielpen de mannen van Chiram en Salomo bij het op maat hakken van de boomstammen en het pasklaar maken van de kostbare steenblokken voor de bouw van de tempel. 1Salomo start met de bouw van de tempel
2In de lente van het vierde regeringsjaar van koning Salomo begon deze met de eigenlijke bouw van de tempel. Dit was vierhonderdtachtig jaar nadat het volk Israël uit de slavernij in Egypte was bevrijd. 3De tempel was 27 meter lang, 9 meter breed en 13,5 meter hoog. 4Het voorportaal van de tempel was 9 meter lang en 4,5 meter diep. 5Overal in het gebouw werden smalle ramen aangebracht. 6Over de volle lengte van de tempel werd aan beide zijden, langs de buitenmuren, een aanbouw met kamers gemaakt. 7Deze aanbouw telde drie verdiepingen, waarvan de onderste 2,25 meter, de middelste 2,7 meter en de bovenste 3,15 meter breed was. De kamers waren aan de tempelmuren bevestigd met balken die op blokken rustten die uit de muur staken, de balken zaten dus niet in de muur vast. 8De stenen die voor de bouw van de tempel werden gebruikt, waren in de steengroeve pasklaar gemaakt. De hele bouw werd uitgevoerd zonder dat ook maar ergens het geluid van een hamer, bijl of ander gereedschap werd vernomen op het bouwterrein. 9De onderste verdieping met kamers was vanaf de rechterkant van de tempel toegankelijk en daar liep ook een wenteltrap omhoog naar de tweede verdieping. Een andere trap leidde van de tweede naar de derde verdieping. 10Toen de bouw van de tempel was voltooid, dekte Salomo alles, ook de balken en pilaren, af met cederhouten panelen. 11Zoals gezegd, stond langs de zijden van de tempel een aanbouw met cederhouten balken bevestigd aan de tempelmuren. Toen gaf de Here Salomo de volgende boodschap over de tempel die hij aan het bouwen was: ‘Als u doet wat Ik zeg en al mijn geboden gehoorzaamt, zal Ik doen wat Ik tegen uw vader David heb gezegd: 14Ik zal te midden van de Israëlieten wonen en hen nooit in de steek laten.’ 15Daarna voltooide Salomo de bouw van de tempel. 16Het hele interieur, van de vloer tot aan het dak, was betimmerd met cederhout en op de vloer lagen planken van cipressenhout. 17De negen meter lange kamer aan het uiterste einde van de tempel—het Heilige der Heiligen—was eveneens van de vloer tot aan het dak met cederhout betimmerd. 18Het overige deel van de tempel, buiten het Heilige der Heiligen, was achttien meter lang. 19Door de hele tempel was de cederhouten betimmering versierd met houtsnijwerk van bloemknoppen en geopende bloemen. Van de stenen muur was niets meer te zien. 20De achterste kamer was de plaats waar de ark van het verbond van de Here geplaatst zou worden. 21Dit binnenste heiligdom was negen meter lang, breed en hoog. Daarna overtrok hij ook het interieur van de rest van de tempel met goud, inclusief het cederhouten altaar dat voor het Heilige der Heiligen stond. In het binnenste heiligdom plaatste Salomo twee afbeeldingen van engelen van olijfhout, elk 4,5 meter hoog. Zij werden zó neergezet dat hun uitgestrekte vleugels van muur tot muur reikten en hun andere vleugels elkaar in het midden van de kamer raakten. Elke vleugel was 2,25 meter lang, zodat iedere engel van vleugeltip tot vleugeltip 4,5 meter mat. De beide engelen werden overtrokken met goud. 30Engelenfiguren, palmbomen en open bloemen werden uitgesneden in de muren van de beide kamers in de tempel 31en de vloer van de beide vertrekken werd overtrokken met goud. 32De deurposten van de ingang tot het binnenste heiligdom namen een vijfde deel van de breedte van de muur in beslag 33en de twee olijfhouten deuren van de toegang waren ook versierd met uitgesneden figuren van cherubs, palmbomen en open bloemen, alles weer overtrokken met goud. 34Daarna maakten zij de olijfhouten deurposten van de ingang van de tempel, die een kwart van de breedte van de muur besloegen. 35Er waren twee vouwdeuren van cipressenhout en elke deur was zo geconstrueerd dat hij door middel van scharnieren tegen de muur kon worden geklapt. 36Ook in deze deuren waren cherubs, palmbomen en bloemen uitgesneden die zorgvuldig met goud waren overtrokken. 37De muur van de binnenste voorhof bestond uit drie rijen uitgehouwen stenen en één rij cederhouten stammen. 38De fundering voor de tempel werd gelegd in de tweede maand van het vierde regeringsjaar van Salomo
