1Nadat koning Saul zijn gesprek met David had beëindigd, ontmoette David Jonatan, de zoon van de koning, en het klikte meteen tussen deze twee. Jonatan bezegelde die vriendschap door David zijn mantel, harnas, zwaard, boog en gordel te geven. Koning Saul haalde David weer bij zich en liet hem niet meer naar huis gaan. 5David was Sauls speciale gezant en volbracht alle veldtochten van de koning steeds met succes. Daarom maakte Saul hem bevelhebber over zijn troepen en David werd een geliefd man bij het leger en het hele volk. 6Maar er was iets onaangenaams gebeurd toen het triomferende leger van Israël terugkeerde, nadat David Goliat had verslagen. Vrouwen uit alle steden stonden langs de kant van de weg om koning Saul toe te juichen. Zij zongen en dansten van blijdschap op de muziek van trommels, tamboerijnen en cimbalen. 7Zij zongen dit lied: ‘Saul heeft zijn duizenden verslagen en David zijn tienduizenden!’ 8Dat wekte de woede van Saul. ‘Wat zullen we nu krijgen,’ zei hij bij zichzelf, ‘ze rekenen David tienduizenden toe en mij slechts duizenden. Als dat zo doorgaat, maken ze hem nog eens koning!’ 9Vanaf die tijd keek Saul met wantrouwende blikken naar David. 10De volgende dag overviel de boze geest van God Saul opnieuw en hij ging als een razende tekeer. David probeerde hem net als voorheen te kalmeren met zijn harpspel. wierp deze plotseling naar David met de bedoeling hem aan de muur te spietsen. David kon de speer tot twee keer toe nog net ontwijken en maakte dat hij wegkwam. Toen begon Saul bang te worden voor David, omdat hij merkte dat de Here hem had verlaten en nu met David was. 13Ten slotte verbood Saul hem in zijn omgeving te komen. Toen koning Saul dit doorkreeg, werd hij nog banger voor hem. Maar heel Israël en Juda droegen David op handen, omdat hij al zijn werk voortreffelijk deed. 17Op een dag zei Saul tegen David: ‘Ik ben van plan je mijn oudste dochter Merab tot vrouw te geven. Maar eerst moet je bewijzen dat je een moedige schoonzoon bent door de oorlogen van de Here te voeren.’ Saul dacht bij zichzelf: ‘Ik zal hem op de Filistijnen afsturen, dan kunnen die hem doden in plaats van dat ik het doe.’ 18Maar David zei: ‘Wie ben ik dat ik de schoonzoon van de koning mag worden. Ik ben maar van eenvoudige afkomst!’ 19En toen de bruiloft aanbrak, huwelijkte Saul Merab onverwacht uit aan Adriël, een man uit Mechola. 20Ondertussen was echter Sauls dochter Michal verliefd geworden op David en Saul was blij toen hij dat hoorde. 21‘Dit is alsnog een mogelijkheid hem door de Filistijnen te laten doden,’ dacht hij. Maar tegen David zei hij: ‘Je kunt toch nog mijn schoonzoon worden, want ik zal je mijn jongste dochter geven.’ 22Saul gaf zijn dienaren opdracht David in vertrouwen te laten weten dat de koning echt op hem gesteld was en dat zij hem allen graag mochten en verwachtten dat hij het voorstel van de koning zou accepteren om zijn schoonzoon te worden. De opdracht werd uitgevoerd. 23Maar David zei: ‘Hoe kan een arme en onbeduidende man als ik een bruidsschat bijeenkrijgen die groot genoeg is om schoonzoon van de koning te kunnen worden?’ 24Toen Sauls mannen dit aan hem doorgaven, 25beval hij hun: ‘Vertel David dat de bruidsschat die hij wil geven, moet bestaan uit honderd voorhuiden van Filistijnen! Wraak op mijn vijanden is alles wat ik wil,’ zei Saul, maar hij hoopte intussen dat David in het gevecht zou worden gedood. 26Toen David dit hoorde, nam hij dat voorstel met beide handen aan. En voordat de tijdslimiet was verstreken, 27trokken hij en zijn mannen eropuit en doodden tweehonderd Filistijnen. David zelf bood de voorhuiden van de doden aan de koning aan. Daarop schonk Saul zijn dochter Michal aan David en werd deze zijn schoonzoon. 28Toen Saul zich realiseerde hoe de Here David hielp en hoeveel zijn dochter Michal van hem hield, 29werd hij nog banger voor hem. Deze angst groeide uit tot een levenslange vijandschap. 30Telkens als het Filistijnse leger aanviel, behaalde David meer successen dan alle andere officieren van Saul bij elkaar. Zijn naam werd een begrip in het hele land.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
