Sauls ongehoorzaamheid
1Saul was nu al meer dan een jaar koning. In zijn tweede regeringsjaar 2koos hij drieduizend man uit als speciale troepen. Hij nam tweeduizend man mee naar Michmas en het gebergte bij Betel. De andere duizend bleven onder bevel van Sauls zoon Jonatan bij Gibea in het land van Benjamin. Jonatan viel het Filistijnse garnizoen bij Geba aan en vernietigde het. Dat nieuws ging als een lopend vuurtje door het Filistijnse land en Saul liet de bazuinblazers het nieuws door heel Israël verspreiden. Hij maakte bekend dat hij het Filistijnse garnizoen had vernietigd en waarschuwde dat de Filistijnen uit woede wraak zouden nemen. Zo werd het hele Israëlitische leger opnieuw gemobiliseerd en verzamelde het zich bij Gilgal. 5De Filistijnen brachten een machtig leger op de been met drieduizend strijdwagens, zesduizend ruiters en een ontelbaar aantal soldaten. Zij verzamelden zich bij Michmas, ten oosten van Bet-Awen. 6Toen de mannen van Israël die enorme troepenmacht tegenover zich zagen, raakten zij in paniek en zochten een veilig heenkomen in grotten, dicht struikgewas en onder rotsen, ja, zelfs in rotsgraven en putten. 7Enkelen staken de Jordaan over en ontkwamen naar het land van Gad en Gilead. Ondertussen bleef Saul in Gilgal en de mannen die bij hem waren, beefden van angst voor wat hun te wachten stond. 8Samuël had Saul eerder gezegd dat hij zeven dagen op zijn komst moest wachten. Maar toen hij niet kwam opdagen en Sauls leger steeds verder slonk, 9besloot Saul het brandoffer en de vredeoffers zelf te brengen. 10Net toen hij het brandoffer had gebracht, verscheen Samuël. Saul ging hem tegemoet om hem te begroeten. 11Maar Samuël vroeg: ‘Wat hebt u nu gedaan?’ Saul antwoordde: ‘Ik zag dat steeds meer mannen mij in de steek lieten en dat u later arriveerde dan dat u had gezegd. En ondertussen liggen de Filistijnen al bij Michmas en ze zijn klaar om aan te vallen. 12Ik dacht bij mijzelf: de Filistijnen zijn klaar voor de strijd en ik heb nog niet eens de hulp van de Here gevraagd! Toen voelde ik mij gedwongen het brandoffer te brengen zonder op u te wachten.’ 13‘U hebt dwaas gehandeld!’ viel Samuël uit. ‘U bent ongehoorzaam geweest aan het gebod van de Here, uw God. Hij was van plan uw koningschap voorgoed op uw nakomelingen te laten overgaan, 14maar nu zal er voortijdig een eind aan komen. Want de Here wil alleen een man die Hem gehoorzaamt. Hij heeft die man naar zijn hart al gevonden en hem benoemd tot koning over zijn volk, want u hebt het gebod van de Here niet gehoorzaamd.’ 15Na die woorden verliet Samuël Gilgal en begaf zich naar Gibea in het land van Benjamin. Toen Saul de soldaten telde die nog waren overgebleven, kwam hij slechts tot zeshonderd man. 16Saul, Jonatan en deze zeshonderd mannen sloegen hun kamp op bij Gibea in het land van Benjamin, terwijl de Filistijnen gelegerd waren bij Michmas. 17Al spoedig verlieten drie groepen plunderaars het Filistijnse kamp, 18de ene trok in de richting van Ofra in het land van Sual, de tweede trok naar Bet-Choron en de derde begaf zich naar een streek boven in het dal van Seboïm, vlak bij de woestijn. 19In die tijd was in het land Israël geen enkele smid te vinden. Daar hadden de Filistijnen voor gezorgd, omdat zij bang waren dat zij wapens zouden maken voor de Israëlieten. 20Wanneer de Israëlieten hun gereedschappen wilden laten slijpen, moesten zij naar een Filistijnse smid. 21Die rekende zeven gram zilver voor het slijpen van een zeis of een ploegijzer en drieënhalve gram zilver voor kleiner gereedschap. 22Zo kwam het dat er geen speer of zwaard in het Israëlitische leger te vinden was, uitgezonderd de wapens van Saul en Jonatan. 23De bergpas bij Michmas werd ondertussen afgezet door een eenheid van het Filistijnse leger.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
