Maar Josabat, een dochter van koning Joram en dus een zuster van Achazja, haalde Achazjaʼs zoon Joas weg bij de zonen die zouden worden gedood en verstopte hem met een verzorgster in een beddenkamer. Deze Josabat was de vrouw van de priester Jojada. 3In het zevende regeringsjaar van koningin Atalja raapte de priester Jojada al zijn moed bij elkaar en nam enkele legerofficieren in vertrouwen. Deze mannen trokken daarna in het geheim het hele land door om de Levieten en familiehoofden op de hoogte te brengen van de plannen en hen uit te nodigen naar Jeruzalem te komen. Een ander derde gedeelte gaat naar het paleis en het laatste derde deel stelt zich op bij de Benedenpoort. Alle anderen moeten op de voorpleinen van de tempel blijven, zoals Gods wetten dat voorschrijven. Want alleen priesters en Levieten die dienstdoen, mogen de tempel betreden, omdat zij zijn gereinigd. 9U, Levieten, moet een lijfwacht rondom de koning vormen, met de wapens in de hand, en iedere onbevoegde doden die de tempel binnenkomt. Blijf steeds bij de koning in de buurt om hem te beschermen.’ 10Toen iedereen precies wist wat hem te doen stond, namen de leiders het bevel over het deel van de priesters dat die sabbat aan het werk ging en het deel dat op die dag zijn weektaak voltooid had. De opperpriester Jojada had hun namelijk geen toestemming gegeven naar huis te gaan. 11Daarna gaf Jojada speren en grote en kleine schilden aan alle legerofficieren. Deze hadden eens aan koning David toebehoord en lagen opgeslagen in de tempel. 12De gewapende mannen stelde hij op aan de noordzijde en de zuidzijde van de tempel en in een groep bij het altaar rond de koning. 13Toen brachten zij de jonge prins naar buiten, zetten hem de kroon op het hoofd, gaven hem een afschrift van de wet van God in de hand en riepen Joas uit tot koning. ‘Lang leve de koning!’ klonk het toen Jojada en zijn zonen Joas zalfden. 14Koningin Atalja hoorde het lawaai en de vreugdekreten voor de koning en zij ging snel naar de tempel om te zien wat er gebeurde. 15En daar stond de jonge koning naast zijn pilaar bij de ingang van de tempel, omringd door legerofficieren en trompetters. Mensen uit het hele land stonden er blij zingend omheen en de zangers zongen hun lied, begeleid door een orkest dat de melodie van een lofzang speelde. Atalja scheurde haar kleren en riep: ‘Verraad! Verraad!’ 16‘Breng haar naar buiten en dood haar,’ schreeuwde Jojada de legerofficieren toe. ‘Maar niet hier in de tempel. Zij kregen haar te pakken bij de paardenstallen van het paleis en doodden haar daar. Daarna sloot Jojada een plechtige overeenkomst dat hij, de koning en het hele volk voortaan aan de Here zouden toebehoren. Alle aanwezigen renden toen naar de tempel van Baäl en braken hem af. De altaren sloegen zij kapot, de beelden gooiden zij omver en Mattan, de priester van Baäl, doodden zij voor zijn eigen altaren. 20Jojada wees de Levitische priesters aan als opzichters en gaf hun tot taak de brandoffers aan de Here te brengen, zoals het in de wet van Mozes werd bevolen. Hij hanteerde dezelfde taakverdeling voor de families van de Levieten als koning David had gedaan. Hun werk moest plaatshebben onder blij gezang. 21De wachters bij de tempelingangen hielden iedereen buiten die niet was geheiligd.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
