Abia werd de nieuwe koning van Juda in Jeruzalem. Hij kwam aan de macht in het achttiende regeringsjaar van koning Jerobeam van Israël en regeerde drie jaar. Zijn moeder heette Maächa en was een dochter van Uriël uit Gibea. Toen hij nog maar kort aan de regering was, brak er oorlog uit tussen Juda en Israël. 5Het leger van Juda, onder bevel van koning Abia, bracht vierhonderdduizend ervaren strijders in het veld die het moesten opnemen tegen tweemaal zoveel Israëlieten, sterke, moedige mannen onder bevel van koning Jerobeam. 6Toen het leger van Juda aankwam bij de berg Semaraïm in het heuvelland van Efraïm, schreeuwde koning Abia naar koning Jerobeam en het Israëlitische leger: 7‘Luister! Beseft u niet dat de Here, de God van Israël, heeft beloofd dat Davids nakomelingen voor altijd koningen van Israël zouden zijn? 8Uw koning Jerobeam is slechts een dienaar van Davids zoon en bovendien nog een verrader van zijn meester. 9Daarna voegde zich een grote groep doortrapte rebellen bij hem die zo Salomoʼs zoon Rechabeam in de steek liet. Die kon hen toen niet tegenhouden, omdat hij jong en onervaren was. 10Denkt u nu werkelijk dat u het koninkrijk van de Here, geleid door een nakomeling van David, kunt verslaan? Uw leger is wel tweemaal zo groot als het mijne, maar u bent vervloekt door die gouden kalveren die u bij u hebt en die Jerobeam voor u maakte, hij noemt ze uw goden. 11Bovendien hebt u de priesters van de Here en de Levieten verdreven en in hun plaats heidense priesters aangesteld. Net als de volken van andere landen accepteert u iedereen die met een jonge stier en zeven rammen voor zijn priesterwijding bij u komt. Iedereen kan priester worden van die zogenaamde goden van u! 12Maar wij blijven zeggen dat de Here onze God is en wij hebben Hem niet de rug toegekeerd. Uitsluitend de nakomelingen van Aäron zijn onze priesters en alleen de Levieten mogen hen helpen bij hun werk. 13Zij verbranden elke morgen en elke avond offers voor de Here, brandoffers en aangenaam geurend reukwerk, zij leggen de toonbroden op de heilige tafel. Elke avond wordt de gouden kandelaar ontstoken, want wij willen trouw blijven aan de aanwijzingen van de Here, onze God, terwijl u Hem de rug hebt toegekeerd. 14Daarom staat God aan onze kant, Hij is onze leider. Zijn priesters zullen, blazend op hun trompetten, vooropgaan wanneer wij tegen u ten strijde trekken. Volk van Israël, vecht niet tegen de Here, de God van uw voorouders, want dat zal u duur komen te staan.’ 15Intussen had Jerobeam een deel van zijn troepen een omtrekkende beweging laten maken. Zijn mannen bevonden zich achter de mannen van Juda en hij kon hen dus insluiten! 16Het leger van Juda zag dat het volkomen ingesloten was. De mannen van Juda hieven hun strijdkreet aan. De mannen van Juda doodden die dag vijfhonderdduizend strijdbare Israëlieten. Door op de Here, de God van hun voorouders, te vertrouwen versloegen de mannen van Juda Israël en zetten de achtervolging in op koning Jerobeams troepen. Jerobeam raakte bovendien de steden Betel, Jesana, Efron en de omliggende dorpen aan Juda kwijt. 22Koning Jerobeam kwam deze slag niet meer te boven, zolang koning Abia aan de macht was. Enige tijd later stierf hij door de hand van de Here.

It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
