Vanaf de tijd dat Amasja God de rug toekeerde, probeerden zijn onderdanen in Jeruzalem voortdurend een complot tegen hem te smeden. Ten slotte moest hij naar Lachis vluchten, maar zij gingen hem achterna en doodden hem daar. 1Met paarden brachten zij hem terug naar Jeruzalem en begroeven hem op de koninklijke begraafplaats. 2Uzzia, koning van Juda
3De inwoners van Juda kroonden hierna Amasjaʼs zestienjarige zoon Uzzia tot hun nieuwe koning. 4Na zijn vaders dood herbouwde hij de stad Elat en voegde deze bij Juda. 5In totaal regeerde hij tweeënvijftig jaar over Juda vanuit Jeruzalem. Zijn moeder heette Jecholja en kwam uit Jeruzalem. 6Hij volgde het voorbeeld van zijn vader Amasja en was in de ogen van de Here een goede koning. 7Tijdens Zecharjaʼs leven deed Uzzia steeds zijn best zo veel mogelijk naar Gods wil te leven. Zecharja was een man die leefde vanuit een diep ontzag voor God. En zolang de koning deed wat God van hem verlangde, ging alles voorspoedig, want God zegende hem. 8Hij verklaarde de Filistijnen de oorlog en maakte de muren van de stad Gat met de grond gelijk. Hetzelfde deed hij met Jabne en Asdod. Daarna bouwde hij nieuwe steden in het gebied van Asdod en in andere delen van het Filistijnse land. 9God hielp hem niet alleen in zijn strijd tegen de Filistijnen, maar gaf hem ook overwinningen op de Arabieren uit Gur-Baäl en op de Meünieten. 10De Ammonieten betaalden hem jaarlijks belasting en zijn roem bereikte zelfs Egypte, zo machtig was hij. 11Hij bouwde versterkte torens op de stadsmuren van Jeruzalem, één bij de Hoekpoort, één bij de Dalpoort en op de plaatsen waar de muur een bocht maakte. 12Tevens bouwde hij torens in de Negev en sloeg waterputten voor de grote kudden vee die hij in de dalen en op de vlakten hield. Hij was een man met een voorliefde voor de landbouw en bezat heel wat boerderijen en wijngaarden, zowel op de berghellingen als in de vruchtbare vlakten. 13Verder beschikte Uzzia over een sterk leger, dat was verdeeld in afdelingen waarvan de grootte was bepaald door de legersecretaris Jeïel en zijn assistent Maäseja. Het geheel stond onder toezicht van Chananja, een van de hoofdbestuurders van de koning. 14De familiehoofden, zesentwintighonderd in totaal, voerden het bevel over de moedige mannen in deze afdelingen. 15Het leger bestond uit driehonderdzevenduizend vijfhonderd manschappen, allemaal getraind om voor de koning te vechten in tijd van oorlog. 16Uzzia rustte hen uit met schilden, speren, helmen, harnassen, bogen en slingers. 17Tevens liet hij in Jeruzalem vernuftige oorlogsmachines maken. Deze waren ontworpen door vindingrijke werklieden en werden gebruikt voor het afschieten van pijlen en zware stenen vanaf de torens. Op die manier werd hij beroemd, want de Here hielp hem op wonderbaarlijke wijze bij de opbouw van zijn macht. 18Maar toen hij zoʼn grote macht had opgebouwd, werd hij hoogmoedig en dat veroorzaakte zijn ondergang. Hij zondigde tegen de Here, zijn God, door het voor hem verboden heiligdom van de tempel binnen te gaan en daar zelf reukwerk op het altaar te verbranden. 19 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse 2.Krøn. 26:18.

Onmiddellijk ging de hogepriester Azarja hem achterna met tachtig andere moedige priesters en verzocht hem weg te gaan. ‘Koning Uzzia, het is u niet toegestaan reukwerk te verbranden,’ verklaarden zij. ‘Dat is het werk van de priesters, de zonen van Aäron, die voor dat werk zijn geheiligd. Ga hier weg, want u bent in overtreding en deze daad zal de Here u niet in dank afnemen.’ 21Uzzia, die het reukwerkvat vasthield om reukwerk te verbranden, werd razend. Maar toen verscheen plotseling melaatsheid op zijn voorhoofd. 22Toen Azarja en de anderen dat zagen, brachten zij hem snel naar buiten. Hij stribbelde niet meer tegen, want hij was zelf veel te erg geschrokken door deze straf van de Here. 23Koning Uzzia bleef tot zijn dood melaats en leefde in afzondering, totaal geïsoleerd van zijn volk en van de tempel. Zijn zoon Jotam werd regent en regelde alle koninklijke aangelegenheden en het bestuur van het land.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
