2 Chronicles 31
Sinds de tijd van Salomo, de zoon van koning David, was er niet meer zoʼn feest als dit in Jeruzalem gevierd. 1Toen gingen de priesters en de Levieten staan en zegenden alle aanwezigen. En vanuit zijn heilige woning in de hemel luisterde de Here naar hun gebeden. 2De grote actie tegen de afgodenverering
3Na afloop van het feest begon een grote actie tegen de afgodenverering. Alle mensen die in Jeruzalem de viering hadden bijgewoond, trokken naar de steden van Juda, Benjamin, Efraïm en Manasse en verwoestten daar de afgodsbeelden, de gewijde stenen, de schandelijke tempels en altaren die met de afgodenverering te maken hadden. Alles werd kort en klein geslagen. Daarna keerden de leden van de noordelijke stammen terug naar hun woonplaatsen. 4Jechizkia verdeelde de priesters en Levieten nu in dienstafdelingen, die moesten zorgen voor het offeren van de brandoffers en de vredeoffers en voor het danken en prijzen van de Here. 5Tevens schonk hij uit zijn eigen bezit dieren die konden worden gebruikt voor de brandoffers die elke morgen en avond, voor de wekelijkse viering van de sabbat en de maandelijkse viering van de nieuwe maan en voor de viering van de jaarlijkse feesten werden gebracht, zoals in de wet van God was voorgeschreven. 6Verder riep hij de inwoners van Jeruzalem op, hun bijdragen te leveren voor de priesters en Levieten, zodat die niet met andere bezigheden in hun levensonderhoud hoefden te voorzien, maar zich volledig konden wijden aan de taken die hun in de wet van God waren opgedragen. 7 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse 2.Krøn. 31:6.

De mensen reageerden spontaan en gaven royaal een deel van hun nieuwe oogst weg: koren, nieuwe wijn, olijfolie, honing en nog andere opbrengsten van het veld. Zij gaven een tiende deel van alles wat zij bezaten en waarvan de wet zei dat het aan de Here, hun God, moest worden gegeven. De eerste tienden kwamen al in de derde maand binnen en de grote stapels bleven tot de zevende maand dagelijks groeien. Toen Jechizkia en zijn medewerkers kwamen kijken en de grote stapels zagen, prezen zij de Here en zegenden zijn volk. 11‘Waar komt dit allemaal vandaan?’ vroeg Jechizkia de priesters en Levieten. 12En de hogepriester Azarja, afkomstig uit de familie van Sadok, antwoordde: ‘Dit zijn de tienden. Wij eten al wekenlang van deze voedselvoorraden en dit is allemaal nog over. Alle geschonken voorraden werden het huis van de Here binnengebracht. De Leviet Konanjahu kreeg er het toezicht over en werd daarbij geholpen door zijn broer Simi. De andere medewerkers waren Jechiël, Azazjahu, Nachat, Asaël, Jerimot, Jozabad, Eliël, Jismachjahu, Machat en Benaja. Kore, de zoon van de Leviet Jimna, die wachter was bij de Oostpoort, zorgde voor de verdeling van de vrijwillige gaven en geschenken onder de priesters. Zijn trouwe helpers waren Eden, Minjamin, Jesua, Semaja, Amarja en Sechanja. De priesters waren per familie opgenomen in het geslachtsregister en de Levieten van twintig jaar en ouder waren gerangschikt onder de namen van hun dienstafdelingen. Ook de gezinnen van alle priesters en die Levieten waren in de registers opgenomen, want door hun betrouwbaarheid moest het heilige heilig worden gehouden. 21In elke priesterstad werden mannen aangewezen die moesten zorgen voor de uitdeling van voedsel en andere zaken aan alle familieleden van de priesters in de omgeving en aan alle geregistreerde Levieten.
