Toen begaf hij zich naar de zeehavens Esjon-Geber en Elat aan de zuidkust van Edom om een vloot uit te rusten van schepen die koning Churam hem ter beschikking had gesteld. Deze schepen, bemand door de ervaren zeelui van koning Churam en Salomoʼs eigen mensen, voeren naar Ofir en kwamen terug met 13,5 ton goud. 2 Het bezoek van de koningin van Seba
3De roem van Salomo kwam ook de koningin van Seba ter ore en zij reisde naar Jeruzalem om hem met enkele raadsels op de proef te stellen. Zij had een groot gevolg slaven en dienaren bij zich en tevens kamelen met een grote lading specerijen, goud en edelstenen. 4Koning Salomo gaf feilloos antwoord op al haar vragen. Niets was onduidelijk voor hem, alles kon hij verklaren. 5Toen zij ontdekte hoe wijs hij was en hoe adembenemend mooi zijn paleis, 6hoe heerlijk het eten op zijn tafels was en hoeveel dienaren en slaven hij had en toen zij zag hoe uitstekend zij allemaal waren gekleed en wat voor brandoffers Salomo in de tempel bracht, was zij diep onder de indruk. 7Ten slotte riep zij uit tegen de koning: ‘Alles wat ik in mijn eigen land over uw welvaart en wijsheid heb gehoord, is waar! 8Ik kon het niet geloven tot ik hier kwam en alles met eigen ogen kon zien. Uw wijsheid is veel groter dan ik mij ooit had kunnen voorstellen! De helft van wat ik hier zie, is mij nog niet eens verteld. 9Wat een voorrecht voor deze mannen om uw dienaren te zijn, hier te mogen staan en naar u te kunnen luisteren. 10Geprezen zij de Here, uw God, die zoveel vertrouwen in u heeft dat Hij u als koning aan zijn volk heeft gegeven! Omdat God uw volk liefheeft, heeft Hij u als koning aangesteld om met recht en gerechtigheid te regeren.’ 11Zij gaf de koning een geschenk in goud met een gewicht van zesendertighonderd kilo en bovendien grote hoeveelheden specerijen van de allerbeste kwaliteit en vele juwelen. 12De mannen van koning Churam en koning Salomo haalden naast goud ook sandelhout en edelstenen uit Ofir. 13De koning gebruikte het sandelhout voor de trappen in de tempel en het paleis en om er harpen en citers voor het orkest van te maken. Nog nooit eerder waren zulke mooie instrumenten in het land Juda gezien. 14Koning Salomo gaf de koningin van Seba geschenken met eenzelfde waarde als zij hem had gegeven en verder alles wat zij van hem verlangde. Salomo ontving jaarlijks een totaalgewicht van zoʼn kleine twintig ton goud van de koningen van Arabië en vele andere landen die hem belasting betaalden. Bovendien zorgde ook de export van zijn handelaren voor grote inkomsten. 17Hij gebruikte een deel van het goud voor tweehonderd grote schilden, elk met een gewicht van 6,6 kilo. 18Verder liet hij driehonderd kleine schilden maken, die elk zoʼn 3,3 kilo wogen. De koning gaf al deze schilden een plaats in zijn paleis, het Woud van Libanon. 19Ook liet hij een enorme ivoren troon maken die met puur goud werd overtrokken. 20De troon had zes gouden treden en een gouden voetenbank. De armleuningen werden geflankeerd door twee leeuwen. 21Aan weerszijden van elke traptrede stonden ook leeuwen. Geen enkele troon ter wereld kon wedijveren met deze. 22Alle drinkbekers van koning Salomo waren van massief goud, evenals alle gebruiksvoorwerpen in het Woud van Libanon. Zilver was in die tijd te goedkoop om voor echt mooie dingen te worden gebruikt. 23Elke drie jaar stuurde de koning zijn schepen met bemanningen van koning Churam naar Tarsis om goud, zilver, ivoor, apen en pauwen te halen. 24Zo werd koning Salomo rijker en wijzer dan enig andere koning ter wereld. 25Van heinde en ver kwamen koningen hem opzoeken om te luisteren naar de wijsheid die God in zijn hart had gelegd. 26Allemaal brachten ze geschenken mee, zilveren en gouden schalen, kleding, wapens, specerijen, paarden en muilezels. Dat ging zo jaar in jaar uit. 27Verder had koning Salomo vierduizend stallen met paarden en strijdwagens en twaalfduizend ruiters, die in de wagensteden en in Jeruzalem waren gelegerd ter bescherming van de koning. 28Hij regeerde over alle koningen en koninkrijken tussen de Eufraat, het land van de Filistijnen en de grens van Egypte. 29Hij zorgde ervoor dat zilver in Jeruzalem net zo gewoon werd gevonden als de stenen op straat. En cederhout werd gebruikt alsof het gewoon vijgenbomenhout was. 30Vanuit Egypte en andere landen werden hem paarden geleverd. 31De rest van Salomoʼs levensloop staat beschreven in de geschiedenis van de profeet Natan en in de profetie van de Siloniet Achia en ook in de visioenen die de ziener Jedo kreeg over Jerobeam, de zoon van Nebat.
