De nieuwe koning van Juda was Achaz, de zoon van koning Jotam, die zestien jaar in Jeruzalem regeerde. Bij zijn troonsbestijging was hij twintig jaar. In Israël regeerde toen koning Pekach, een zoon van Remaljahu, die zeventien jaar aan de macht was toen Achaz koning werd. Achaz was een goddeloze koning. Hij volgde de Here niet zoals zijn voorvader David had gedaan 5en hij was net zo slecht als de koningen van Israël. Hij doodde zelfs zijn eigen zoon en offerde hem als brandoffer aan de afgoden, in navolging van de heidense gewoonten van de landen rondom Juda, volken die de Here verwoestte toen de Israëlieten het land binnenkwamen. 6Hij offerde en verbrandde reukwerk op de heuvels en op de talloze altaren in de schaduw van de bomen. 7Koning Resin van Syrië en koning Pekach van Israël verklaarden Achaz de oorlog en belegerden Jeruzalem. Zij slaagden er echter niet in de stad in te nemen. 8Koning Resin van Syrië wist evenwel de stad Elat voor Syrië terug te veroveren. Hij joeg de Joodse inwoners weg en stuurde Edomieten om zich daar te vestigen. Die wonen daar nu nog. 9Koning Achaz stuurde een boodschapper naar koning Tiglatpileser van Assyrië en smeekte hem om hulp tegen de legers van Syrië en Israël. 10Achaz haalde het goud en zilver uit de tempel en uit de schatkamers van het paleis en stuurde dat als geschenk naar de Assyrische koning. 11In antwoord daarop vielen de Assyriërs Damascus, de hoofdstad van Syrië, aan. Zij namen de inwoners van de stad mee als gevangenen naar Kir. Ook doodden zij koning Resin van Syrië. 12Koning Achaz ging naar Damascus om koning Tiglatpileser te ontmoeten en tijdens zijn verblijf in de stad zag hij een ongewoon altaar in een heidense tempel. Uria bouwde het altaar op grond van deze gegevens na, zodat de koning het na zijn terugkeer uit Damascus kon inwijden met een offer. 15Toen hij terug was, ging de koning naar het altaar en bracht een brandoffer en een spijsoffer, goot een drankoffer over het altaar en sprenkelde het bloed van enkele vredeoffers er overheen. 16Daarna verwijderde hij het oude koperen altaar vóór uit de tempel—dat had tussen de ingang van de tempel en het nieuwe altaar gestaan—en plaatste het ten noorden van het nieuwe altaar. 17Hij droeg de priester Uria op het nieuwe altaar te gebruiken voor de brandoffers, het spijsoffer dat ʼs avonds werd gebracht, de brandoffers en spijsoffers van de koning en de offers van de mensen, ook hun drankoffers. Het bloed van de brandoffers en de slachtoffers moest ook over het nieuwe altaar worden gesprenkeld. ‘Het oude koperen altaar,’ zei hij, ‘zal voortaan voor mijn persoonlijk gebruik zijn wanneer ik wil nagaan wat de wil van God is.’ 18De priester Uria deed wat koning Achaz had opgedragen. 19Daarna liet de koning de verrijdbare onderstellen in de tempel slopen en de sluitplaten en de watervaten weghalen die erop stonden. Hij liet het grote koperen vat van de koperen ossen die het droegen, afhalen en op het stenen plaveisel neerzetten. 20Ter wille van de koning van Assyrië liet hij bovendien de galerij tussen het paleis en de tempel, die voor de diensten op de sabbat gebruikt werd, weghalen.

It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
