Sommigen sloten zich bij hem aan en werden christen. Onder hen waren Dionysius, een lid van de Areopagus, en een vrouw, die Damaris heette, en nog enkele anderen. 1Paulus in Korinthe
2Paulus verliet Athene en ging naar de stad Korinthe. 3Daar ontmoette hij Aquila, een Jood uit Pontus, en zijn vrouw Priscilla. Zij waren kort daarvoor uit Italië gekomen. Keizer Claudius had namelijk bevolen dat alle Joden Rome moesten verlaten. 4Paulus bleef bij hen en werkte met hen samen, omdat zij, net als hij, tentenmakers waren. 5Elke sabbat was hij in de synagoge te vinden, waar hij met Joden en gelovige Grieken discussieerde en probeerde hen te overtuigen. 6Nadat Silas en Timotheüs uit Macedonië waren aangekomen, richtte Paulus zich helemaal op de verkondiging van het goede nieuws. Bij elke gelegenheid wees hij de Joden er met grote nadruk op dat Jezus de Christus is. 7Maar toen zij vijandig werden en met Jezus gingen spotten, schudde Paulus het stof van zijn kleren en zei: ‘U veroordeelt uzelf. Het is niet meer mijn verantwoording. Vanaf nu ga ik naar de mensen die niet tot het Joodse volk behoren.’ 8Hij verliet de synagoge en ging naar het huis ernaast, waar Titius Justus woonde. Dit was een man die God vereerde, hoewel hij geen Jood was. 9Crispus, de leider van de synagoge, en al zijn huisgenoten kwamen wel tot geloof in de Here. Er waren nog veel meer Korinthiërs die wel aannamen wat Paulus zei en zich lieten dopen. 10Op een nacht zei de Here in een visioen tegen Paulus: ‘Wees niet bang! Spreek vrijuit. Laat u niet het zwijgen opleggen, 11want Ik ben bij u. Niemand zal een vinger naar u uitsteken. Een groot aantal mensen in deze stad hoort bij Mij.’ 12Daarom bleef Paulus nog anderhalf jaar in Korinthe en sprak er over God. 13Toen Gallio gouverneur van Achaje werd, spanden de Joden samen en brachten Paulus voor de rechtbank. 14Zij beschuldigden hem ervan de mensen ertoe over te halen God te vereren op een manier die in strijd was met de Joodse wet. 15Net toen Paulus zich wilde verdedigen, nam Gallio het woord en zei tegen hen: ‘Joden, luister! Als het hier om een misdaad of een zware overtreding ging, zou ik u natuurlijk moeten aanhoren. 16Maar nu het een kwestie is van woorden en namen en uw eigen Joodse wet, zoekt u het zelf maar uit. Ik ben niet van plan mij daarmee te bemoeien.’ 17Hij joeg hen de rechtszaal uit. 18Toen grepen zij Sosthenes, de leider van de synagoge en gaven hem voor de ogen van Gallio een pak slaag. Maar Gallio trok zich er niets van aan. 19Paulus bleef nog in de stad. Na enkele dagen nam hij afscheid van de christenen en vertrok naar Syrië. Priscilla en Aquila gingen met hem mee. Voor hij in Kenchreeën aan boord ging, liet hij zijn haar afknippen, omdat hij een plechtige belofte had afgelegd. 20Toen zij in de haven van Efeze kwamen, liet hij de anderen achter en ging zelf naar de synagoge. Daar had hij lange gesprekken met de Joden. 21Die vroegen hem zelfs nog een paar dagen te blijven, maar dat wilde hij niet. 22Hij nam afscheid van hen met de woorden: ‘Als God het wil, kom ik bij u terug.’ Hij verliet Efeze per schip. 23Na aankomst in Caesarea ging hij naar Jeruzalem en bezocht daar de christengemeente. Daarna reisde hij verder naar Antiochië. 24Maar ook daar bleef hij niet lang. Al gauw vertrok hij weer naar Galatië en Frygië om de christenen in die streken te bemoedigen. 25Ondertussen was er in Efeze een Jood aangekomen die heel goed kon spreken en de Boeken zeer goed kende. Hij heette Apollos en kwam uit Alexandrië in Egypte. 26Daar had iemand hem iets verteld over wat Jezus gedaan en verkondigd had. Hij sprak vol vuur over Jezus en de dingen die hij zei waren juist, maar hij wist niet veel meer dan de doop zoals Johannes die verrichtte. 27In de synagoge nam hij vrijmoedig het woord. Priscilla en Aquila hoorden hem. Zij namen hem mee naar huis en legden hem uit wat er allemaal met Jezus was gebeurd en wat dat betekende. 28Apollos was van plan naar Achaje te gaan en de christenen van Efeze vonden dat een goed idee. Ze schreven aan hun geloofsgenoten dat zij hem hartelijk moesten ontvangen. Nadat hij in Achaje was aangekomen, werd hij op een geweldige wijze door God gebruikt om de christenen daar te ondersteunen.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
