Jetro op bezoek bij Mozes
1Het nieuws over de wonderlijke dingen die de Here voor zijn volk en voor Mozes deed en hoe Hij het volk uit Egypte had bevrijd, bereikte ook Jetro, de priester van Midjan en schoonvader van Mozes. 2Jetro ging op weg met Mozesʼ vrouw Sippora—Mozes had haar naar huis gestuurd— 3en Mozesʼ twee zonen, Gersom (Vreemdeling, want Mozes zei bij zijn geboorte: ‘Ik heb rondgedwaald in een vreemd land’) 4en Eliëzer (God is mijn hulp, want Mozes zei bij zijn geboorte: ‘De God van mijn vader heeft mij geholpen en mij van het zwaard van de farao gered’). 5Zij ontmoetten Mozes toen hij met het volk bij de berg van God verbleef. 6‘Uw schoonvader Jetro is hier om u te bezoeken,’ werd Mozes meegedeeld. ‘Hij heeft uw vrouw en uw twee zonen bij zich.’ 7Mozes verliet zijn tent om hen te begroeten en verwelkomde zijn schoonvader uitbundig. Zij informeerden naar elkaars gezondheid en liepen toen naar Mozesʼ tent om daar verder te praten. 8Mozes vertelde zijn schoonvader alles wat er was gebeurd, wat de Here met de farao en de Egyptenaren had gedaan om Israël te bevrijden, hoeveel problemen er onderweg waren geweest en hoe de Here zijn volk uit die moeilijkheden had geholpen. 9Jetro was blij over alles wat de Here voor Israël had gedaan en dat Hij het volk uit Egypte had bevrijd. 10‘Geprezen zij de Here,’ zei Jetro, ‘want Hij heeft u bevrijd uit de handen van de Egyptenaren en de farao en Israël in veiligheid gebracht. 11Nu weet ik zeker dat de Here de Allerhoogste is. Hij heeft immers het volk verlost uit de onderdrukking van Egypte!’ 12Jetro bracht offers aan de Here en daarna kwamen Aäron en de leiders van Israël om met Jetro de maaltijd te gebruiken. 13De volgende dag hield Mozes net als altijd zitting om recht te spreken tussen de Israëlieten. Een zitting die van ʼs morgens tot ʼs avonds duurde. 14Toen Mozesʼ schoonvader zag hoeveel tijd dit kostte, zei hij: ‘Waarom doe je dit allemaal alleen, terwijl al die mensen daar de hele dag op hun beurt moeten wachten?’ 15 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse 2.Mos. 18:16.

‘Omdat de mensen bij mij komen met hun meningsverschillen en van mij verwachten dat ik Gods beslissing daarover geef,’ legde Mozes uit. ‘Ik ben hun rechter en beslis wie gelijk en wie ongelijk heeft. Bovendien onderwijs ik zo Gods wetten aan hen. Ik pas die wetten toe op hun onderlinge meningsverschillen.’ 17‘Maar dat kan toch zo niet!’ riep zijn schoonvader. 18‘Op deze wijze raak je overbelast en ook voor het volk is het zo veel te vermoeiend. Wat moet er van het volk terechtkomen als jij het werk niet meer aankunt? 19Laat mij je raad geven en God zal je helpen: jij moet de vertegenwoordiger bij God zijn van het volk die hun problemen aan Hem voorlegt om een uitspraak te krijgen. Gods beslissingen geef jij aan het volk door. 20Jij onderwijst hen in Gods wetten en laat hun de beginselen van een godvrezend leven zien. 21Zoek onder het volk capabele, godvrezende en onomkoopbare mannen en benoem hen tot rechter, één rechter per duizend mensen. Hij moet tien andere rechters onder zich hebben die ieder de zorg hebben voor honderd mensen. Onder die rechters vallen weer twee anderen, die ieder verantwoordelijk zijn voor vijftig mensen. Deze laatsten moeten ieder weer vijf mannen onder zich hebben, die verantwoordelijk zijn voor tien mensen. 22Geef deze mensen de zorg voor de rechtspraak onder het volk en zorg dat zij altijd bereikbaar zijn. Alle zaken die te belangrijk of te moeilijk zijn, kunnen alsnog voor jou worden gebracht. Maar de kleine zaken kunnen zij zelf afhandelen. Op die manier wordt jouw last lichter omdat je die met hen kunt delen. 23Als je deze raad opvolgt en het is naar de wil van God, zul je niet meer zo zwaar worden belast en zullen vrede en een goede verstandhouding onder het volk heersen.’ 24Mozes nam de raad van zijn schoonvader ter harte. 25Hij koos een aantal flinke mannen uit en stelde hen aan als rechters over het volk, over duizend, honderd, vijftig en tien personen. 26Zij waren altijd bereikbaar voor het spreken van recht. De moeilijke gevallen brachten zij voor Mozes, maar de eenvoudige zaken behandelden zij zelf. 27Kort daarna liet Mozes zijn schoonvader terugkeren naar zijn eigen land.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
