Genesis 44
De zilveren drinkbeker
1Toen zijn broers konden vertrekken, riep Jozef zijn huismeester bij zich en zei: ‘Vul hun zakken met zoveel graan als ze kunnen dragen. Boven op het graan moet je het geld leggen dat ze hebben betaald. 2In de zak van de jongste moet je bovendien mijn eigen zilveren drinkbeker leggen.’ De huismeester deed wat hem was gezegd. 3De broers gingen bij het aanbreken van de dag op weg met hun zwaarbeladen ezels. 4Toen ze net buiten de stad waren, riep Jozef zijn huismeester en zei: ‘Ga hen achterna en houd hen aan. 5Vraag hun: “Waarom hebt u mijn meesters zilveren drinkbeker gestolen die hij altijd gebruikt om de toekomst te voorspellen? Wat slecht van u om op deze wijze uw weldoener te behandelen!” ’ 6De huismeester ging achter de broers aan en zei precies wat Jozef hem had opgedragen. 7‘Waar hebt u het toch over?’ vroegen de broers verbaasd. ‘Wie denkt u dat u voor u hebt, dat u ons van zoʼn misdaad beschuldigt? 8Hebben wij het geld dat we in onze zakken hadden gevonden, niet teruggebracht? 9Als u die beker bij een van ons vindt, moge diegene dan sterven. En wij zullen voor altijd slaven van uw meester zijn!’ 10‘Dat lijkt me redelijk,’ zei de man, ‘maar alleen de dief zal slaaf worden, de anderen gaan vrijuit.’ 11Ze haalden de zakken van hun ezels en maakten die open. 12De huismeester begon bij de oudste om de zakken te doorzoeken. Ten slotte werd de beker in Benjamins zak gevonden. 13De broers scheurden in wanhoop hun kleren, laadden de zakken weer op hun ezels en gingen terug naar de stad. 14Jozef was nog thuis toen Juda en zijn broers bij het paleis kwamen. Zij vielen voor hem op de grond. 15‘Wat dacht u eigenlijk?’ vroeg Jozef. ‘Begrijpt u niet dat een man als ik kan zien wat voor anderen verborgen is?’ 16Juda antwoordde: ‘Wat kunnen wij zeggen, meneer? Hoe kunnen wij onze onschuld bewijzen? God straft ons voor onze zonden. Wij zijn teruggekomen om uw slaven te worden, wij en hij, in wiens zak de beker is gevonden.’ 17‘Nee,’ zei Jozef, ‘alleen de man die de beker heeft gestolen, zal mijn slaaf zijn. De anderen kunnen in vrede teruggaan naar hun vader.’ 18Toen deed Juda een stap naar voren en zei: ‘Och hoogheid, laat mij dit zeggen. Luistert u even naar mij, want ik weet dat u mij kunt vernietigen, alsof u de farao zelf was. Heb alstublieft even geduld en luister naar mij. 19U vroeg ons naar onze vader en of wij nog een broer hadden en wij zeiden: 20“Ja, wij hebben een vader, een oude man. Hij heeft een kind dat hij op hoge leeftijd heeft gekregen, de jongste. Zijn broer is dood. Hij is de enig overgeblevene van zijn moeders kinderen en zijn vader houdt erg veel van hem.” 21Toen zei u tegen ons: “Breng hem hier, zodat ik hem kan zien.” 22Maar wij zeiden toen: “De jongen kan niet bij zijn vader weg, anders zou deze sterven.” 23Maar u zei ons: “Kom hier niet terug, tenzij uw jongste broer erbij is.” 24Wij keerden terug naar onze vader en vertelden hem wat u had gezegd. 25 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse 1.Mos. 44:26.

Toen zei mijn vader tegen ons: “Jullie weten dat mijn vrouw twee zonen had en dat één wegging en nooit meer terugkwam. Hoogstwaarschijnlijk werd hij door een wild dier verscheurd. Zo liggen de zaken. Als ik terugkom bij mijn vader zonder de jongen—aangezien zijn leven zo verbonden is met het leven van zijn zoon—en hij ziet dat hij er niet is, zal hij sterven. En wij zullen er verantwoordelijk voor zijn dat zijn grijze haren met verdriet het graf in gaan. 32Ik heb mij borg gesteld voor de jongen. Ik zei tegen mijn vader: “Als ik hem niet bij u terugbreng, zal ik voor altijd bij u in de schuld staan.” 33Alstublieft, laat mij als slaaf hier blijven in plaats van de jongen en laat hem met zijn broers terugkeren. 34Ik kan mijn vader toch niet onder ogen komen zonder de jongen? Ik zou zijn verdriet niet kunnen verdragen.’

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
