Het land van de halve stam van Manasse
1De stam van Manasse kreeg ook land toegewezen door loting, want Manasse was Jozefs oudste zoon. De familie van Machir, de oudste zoon van Manasse en heer van Gilead, kreeg het land van Gilead en Basan ten oosten van de Jordaan, want zij waren een familie van heldhaftige strijders. 2Nu werd dus land ten westen van de Jordaan toegewezen aan de families van Abiëzer, Chelek, Asriël, Sechem, Chefer en Semida. 3Chefers zoon Selofchad, een kleinzoon van Gilead, achterkleinzoon van Machir en achterachterkleinzoon van Manasse, had echter geen zonen. Hij had wel vijf dochters die Machla, Noa, Chogla, Milka en Tirsa heetten. 4Deze vrouwen gingen naar de priester Eleazar, Jozua en de Israëlitische leiders en brachten hun in herinnering: ‘De Here heeft Mozes gezegd dat wij net zoveel eigendom moesten krijgen als de mannen van onze stam.’ Zo kregen deze vrouwen, precies zoals de Here door Mozes had bevolen, net zoʼn groot erfdeel als hun vijf ooms. 5 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse Jos. 17:6.

Het totale erfdeel kwam daarmee op tien stukken land, nog afgezien van het land van Gilead en Basan aan de andere kant van de Jordaan. 7De noordgrens van de stam van Manasse liep in zuidelijke richting van Aser naar Michmethat dat ten oosten van Sichem ligt. Verder naar het zuiden bereikte de grens de bron van Tappuach. 8Het land van Tappuach behoorde toe aan Manasse, maar de stad Tappuach, op de grens van Manasses land, maakte deel uit van het gebied van Efraïm. 9Vanaf de bron van Tappuach volgde de grens van Manasse de noordelijke oever van de beek Kana naar de Middellandse Zee. Verscheidene steden ten zuiden van de rivier behoorden aan Efraïm toe, ook al lagen zij in het gebied van Manasse. 10Het land ten zuiden van de Kana, dat zich naar het westen uitstrekte tot aan de Middellandse Zeekust, was aan Efraïm toegewezen en het land ten noorden van de beek en ten oosten van de kust ging naar Manasse. Manasses noordgrens was het gebied van Aser en de oostgrens was het gebied van Issachar. 11De halve stam van Manasse kreeg ook nog enkele steden in de gebieden die aan Issachar en Aser waren toegewezen. Dat waren: Bet-San, Jibleam, Dor, Endor, Taänach, Megiddo met zijn drie heuvels en de dorpen die bij deze steden behoorden. 12Maar omdat de nakomelingen van Manasse er niet in slaagden de inwoners van deze steden te verdrijven, bleven de Kanaänieten er wonen. 13Toen de Israëlieten later echter sterk genoeg waren geworden, dwongen zij de Kanaänieten tot slavenarbeid. 14De twee stammen van Jozef gingen naar Jozua en vroegen: ‘Waarom hebt u ons slechts één stuk land toegewezen, terwijl de Here ons zoʼn grote bevolking heeft gegeven?’ 15‘Als het heuvelgebied van Efraïm niet groot genoeg voor u is,’ antwoordde Jozua, ‘kap dan open plekken in het bos waar de Perizzieten en Refaïeten wonen.’ 16 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse Jos. 17:18.

‘Dat is goed,’ vonden de stammen van Jozef, ‘want de Kanaänieten in de laagvlakten rond Bet-San en de vallei van Jizreël hebben ijzeren strijdwagens en zijn te sterk voor ons.’ ‘Dan krijgen jullie de bossen in het gebergte,’ besloot Jozua, ‘en omdat jullie zoʼn grote en sterke stam vormen, zullen jullie er zeker in slagen daar ruimte te maken om te kunnen leven. Jullie krijgen dan een dubbel deel, want de Kanaänieten zullen zeker uit de dalen worden verdreven, ook al zijn zij sterk en hebben zij ijzeren strijdwagens.’

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
