Balak en Bileam

Toen koning Balak van Moab, de zoon van Sippor, besefte hoeveel mensen daar verbleven en ook nog hoorde wat zij met de Amorieten hadden gedaan, werden hij en zijn onderdanen erg bang. Balak pleegde overleg met de vorsten van Midjan en zei: ‘Als wij niet oppassen, zullen die Israëlieten ons land afgrazen als een kudde ossen die een weiland kaalvreet!’ 5 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse 4.Mos. 22:6.

Daarom stuurde koning Balak boodschappers naar Bileam (de zoon van Beor) die in zijn vaderland Petor dicht bij de Eufraat woonde. Hij smeekte Bileam hem te komen helpen met de woorden: ‘Er is hier een volk uit Egypte aangekomen dat het hele land in beslag neemt. Ze hebben hun kamp recht tegenover mij opgeslagen! Kom alstublieft hierheen en vervloek hen voor mij, zodat ik hen uit mijn land kan verdrijven. Want ze zijn mij te sterk. U staat erom bekend dat uw zegen ook werkelijk een zegen is en dat ieder die door u wordt vervloekt, ook werkelijk ís vervloekt.’ 7De boodschappers die hij stuurde, behoorden tot de hoogste leiders uit Moab en Midjan. Zij zochten Bileam op met het loon voor zijn waarzegging al in de hand en legden hem uit wat Balak van hem wilde. 8‘Blijf hier vannacht,’ zei Bileam, ‘en morgenochtend zal ik jullie zeggen wat de Here wil dat ik zeg.’ Dat deden zij. 9Die nacht kwam God naar Bileam en vroeg hem: ‘Wie zijn die mannen die bij u zijn?’ 10‘Koning Balak van Moab heeft hen gestuurd,’ antwoordde hij. 11‘De koning zegt dat er een volk uit Egypte is gekomen en aan de grens van Moab zijn kamp heeft opgeslagen. Hij wil dat ik onmiddellijk naar hem toe kom om dat volk te vervloeken, in de hoop dat hij het dan met succes kan bestrijden.’ 12‘Ga daar niet naartoe!’ zei God tegen hem. ‘U mag hen niet vervloeken, want Ik heb hen gezegend.’ 13De volgende morgen zei Bileam tegen de boodschappers: ‘Gaat u maar terug naar uw land. De Here staat niet toe dat ik met u meega.’ 14Zo keerden de boodschappers terug en brachten Bileams weigering over aan koning Balak. 15Maar Balak gaf de moed nog niet op. Zij kwamen bij Bileam met de boodschap: ‘Koning Balak smeekt u te komen. Hij zal u rijk belonen en alles doen wat u zegt. Alles wat u maar wilt, als u maar met ons mee komt en dat volk vervloekt!’ 18Maar Bileam antwoordde: ‘Ook al gaf hij mij een paleis vol goud en zilver, dan nog kan ik niets doen wat in gaat tegen de opdracht van de Here, mijn God. 19Maar u kunt hier vannacht blijven, dan zal ik de Here nog eens om zijn mening vragen. Misschien heeft Hij nog iets aan zijn woorden toe te voegen.’ 20Die nacht zei God tegen Bileam: ‘Sta op en ga met deze mannen mee, maar zorg ervoor dat u alleen dat zegt wat Ik u opdraag.’ 21Zo zadelde Bileam de volgende morgen zijn ezelin en vertrok met de boodschappers naar Moab. 22 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse 4.Mos. 22:23.

Maar God was toornig omdat Bileam meeging naar Moab en Hij stuurde zijn Engel, die Zich op de weg opstelde om tegen Bileam op te treden. Bileam reed intussen op zijn ezelin verder met twee dienaren bij zich. Plotseling zag Bileams ezelin de Engel van de Here met getrokken zwaard op de weg staan. Zij rende de weg af, een veld in, maar Bileam sloeg haar terug naar de weg. 24De Engel van de Here stond nu tussen twee muren op de weg, waar aan weerszijden wijngaarden lagen. 25Toen de ezelin de Engel van de Here daar zag staan, drukte ze zich tegen de muur, zodat Bileams voet beklemd raakte. Dat leverde de ezelin opnieuw slaag op. 26De Engel van de Here ging naar een plaats waar de weg zo smal was dat de ezelin er niet meer door kon. 27Toen de ezelin dat zag, ging ze op de weg liggen! Maar nu werd Bileam pas goed boos en hij ranselde de ezelin af met zijn stok. 28Toen liet de Here de ezelin spreken! ‘Wat heb ik misdaan dat u mij nu al drie keer hebt geslagen?’ vroeg zij Bileam. 29‘Omdat je een spelletje met mij speelt!’ schreeuwde Bileam boos. ‘Als ik een zwaard bij me had, zou ik je doden!’ 30‘Heb ik zoiets ooit eerder in mijn leven gedaan?’ vroeg de ezelin. ‘Nee,’ moest Bileam toegeven. 31Toen opende de Here Bileams ogen en hij zag de Engel van de Here met het getrokken zwaard op de weg staan. Toen boog Bileam het hoofd en liet zich op de grond vallen. 32‘Waarom hebt u uw ezelin driemaal geslagen?’ vroeg de Engel van de Here hem. ‘Ik ben gekomen om u tegen te houden, want u bevindt zich op een weg die Ik u niet heb gewezen. 33Driemaal zag de ezelin Mij staan en ontliep zij Mij. Als zij dat niet had gedaan, was u nu dood en zou Ik haar hebben laten leven.’ 34Toen bekende Bileam: ‘Ik heb gezondigd. Ik was mij er niet van bewust dat U op de weg stond. Ik zal naar huis teruggaan als U dat wilt.’ 35Maar de Engel van de Here zei: ‘Ga met die mannen mee, maar zeg alleen dat wat Ik u opdraag te zeggen.’ Zo reisde Bileam met de mannen verder. 36Toen koning Balak hoorde dat Bileam in aantocht was, verliet hij de hoofdstad en ging hem tegemoet tot de rivier de Arnon, de grens van zijn land. 37‘Waarom hebt u zo lang gewacht met hier te komen?’ vroeg hij Bileam. ‘Geloofde u niet dat ik u zou belonen?’ 38Bileam antwoordde: ‘Ik ben gekomen, maar ik kan niets anders zeggen dan wat God mij opdraagt te zeggen. Dat zijn dus de woorden die ik zal spreken.’ 39Bileam vergezelde de koning naar Kirjat-Chusot, 40waar koning Balak ossen en schapen offerde en ook aan Bileam en de boodschappers dieren gaf voor hun offers. 41De volgende morgen nam Balak Bileam mee naar de top van de hoogte van Baäl. Vanaf dat punt konden zij een deel van het volk Israël zien.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
